-Prof. Dr. Heinz Gärtner.

US-Objectives in Iran: Surrender or Early Exit?

US-Objectives in Iran: Surrender or Early Exit?
President Trump has demanded the “unconditional surrender” of Iran. At the same time, he has claimed that the war would be over within four—and later six—weeks. Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville added that the “conflict should be very short and sweet”. The President later even referred to the war in Iran as a “short-term excursion”.

A Better Life for Iranians Must Be the Priority

The Iranian government may be able to suppress protests, but the potential for opposition will remain as long as public grievances and widespread hardship persist. President Trump appears to recognize that military intervention would not produce a reliable government; instead, it would likely create chaos or bring a faction of the security apparatus to power. Punitive strikes might be possible, however. He also seems to be shifting the debate back to more conventional issues, such as Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.

The kidnapping of the Supreme Leader would not change the system either. First, Iran’s political system is too complex to be transformed simply by removing its top figure. Second, the Iranian government has already established a collective leadership structure that would manage any transition. A better life for Iranians—which must be the priority—will only be possible if Iran’s relations with the United States and Israel improve, bringing an end to the country’s international isolation.
