CV

Originally from Trapani, Sicily, I moved to Austria after graduating from high school to pursue a degree in mathematics. I completed both my bachelor’s and master’s at the University of Vienna (in 2015 and 2017, respectively). In the fall of 2018, I was a recipient of a three-year scholarship for doctoral candidates which allowed me to continue my studies. I have now entered the final year of my PhD, funded by grant P32333 of the Austrian Science Fund (and previously by grant Y966).

2022

In September, I attended the annual Summer School of the Vienna Doctoral School of Mathematics (VSM) in Techendorf am Weissensee (Austria).

From 11 to 29 July, I attended the international Summer School on the Langlands program that took place at IHES (Bures-sur-Yvette, France).

On 8 June, I attended the event Diversity in Academia, organized by the Austrian Association of Women in Mathematics, that took place in Vienna.

From 25 to 29 April, I attended the VSM mini-course Introduction to the Mathematics of String Theory. I had also been involved in the organization of the mini-course over the six months leading up to the event.

From 19 to 22 April, I participated in and spoke at the VSM Student Retreat in Yspertal (Austria). I gave an informal talk about the function field analogy in number theory and introduced the concept of an “infinite prime”.

From 11 to 15 April, I participated in the international workshop Minimal Representations and Theta Correspondence at Erwin Schrödinger Institut (ESI), Vienna.

From 29 March to 7 April, I attended the VSM mini-course A Gentle Introduction to Metric Geometry.

In March, I participated in the VSM Python Tutorial.

Moreover, throughout the year I have been involved in the organization the VSM PhD Colloquium.

Starting in the fall term, I took over as main student organizer of the PhD Colloquium of the Vienna Doctoral School of Mathematics (VSM).

In September, I attended the annual VSM Summer School in Techendorf am Weissensee (Austria).

In June, I participated in the VSM Workshop A PhD in Mathematics – Career Possibilities & Gender Aspects (online).

In February, I attended the first edition of the Austrian Day of Women in Mathematics (online).

In May, I participated in the international online conference Cross Atlantic Representation Theory and Other topics ONline (CARTOON).

In March, I participated in and spoke at the VSM Student Retreat in Yspertal (Austria). I gave an informal talk about functions with counter-intuitive properties, with the Conway base-13 function as the main example.

In October, I attended an international workshop on Automorphic p-adic L-functions and regulators in Lille, France.

In September, I attended the annual VSM Summer School in Techendorf am Weissensee (Austria).

In July, I participated in and spoke at a retreat of the Algebraic Geometry research group of the University of Vienna. See Talks for more details.

In March, I attended the VSM Winter School on Quantum Computing in Dienten am Hochkönig (Austria).

In October, I began my employment as a doctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of Vienna, as a recipient of the uni:docs Fellowship Programme for Doctoral Candidates.

Also in October, I began my employment as adjunct lecturer at the College of Teacher Education Burgenland.

In September, I attended the annual VSM Summer School in Techendorf am Weissensee (Austria).

In April, I attended the international conference New Developments in Automorphic Forms at the Instituto de Matemáticas Universidad de Sevilla (IMUS) in Seville (Spain).

In March, I participated in the VSM student retreat in Zwettl (Austria). I prepared a presentation on topological groups and their completions when regarded as uniform spaces (but was unable to give the talk because I fell ill).

Also in March, I began my employment as adjunct lecturer at the Department of Physics of the University of Vienna.

In October, I participated in Interscience – the first symposium of the Vienna Doctoral Schools.

In June, I defended my master’s thesis on The Hasse–Minkowski Theorem for global fields, written under the supervision of Leonhard Summerer, and thus completed the master’s degree mit Auszeichnung ( = “with distinction”).

Earlier in June, I participated in an international workshop on the topic of resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. The workshop took place at Erwin Schrödinger Institut (ESI) in Vienna.

In May, I participated in and spoke at a joint workshop of Herwig Hauser’s and Josef Schicho’s research groups (University of Vienna and RICAM, respectively) near Klagenfurt, Austria. I gave an introductory talk on Hensel’s lemma and local fields.

In late April, I participated in and spoke at the first VSM Student Retreat at the bifeb in Strobl am Wolfgangsee (Austria). I gave a talk about a proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra not involving complex analysis.

On 1 April, I was a successful competitor in the VJIMC (Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition) in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

From January to June, I was employed as a student assistant in Herwig Hauser’s research group, funded by grant P25652 of the Austrian Science Fund.

Also in the first half of the year, I was recommended for and participated in the High Potential Programme NaturTalente of the University of Vienna.

In September, I attended the first annual Summer School of the Vienna Doctoral School of Mathematics in Obergurgl (Austria).

In April, I was a competitor in the VJIMC (Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition) in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

In March, I participated in and spoke at a joint workshop of Herwig Hauser’s and Josef Schicho’s research groups (University of Vienna and RICAM, respectively) in Znojmo, Czech Republic. I gave a talk on Thomassen’s combinatorial proof of the Jordan Curve Theorem.

In June, I defended my second bachelor’s thesis, written under the supervision of Herwig Hauser. (The curriculum used to require the preparation of two theses.) The topic of the thesis was “p-adic analysis and its applications“. I officially completed my bachelor’s degree in July, with full marks.

In March, I was a competitor in the VJIMC (Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition).

In January and February, I participated in the first three weeks of the special semester on Artin Approximation and Singularities at CIRM in Luminy (France). More precisely, I attended
1. the doctoral course Introduction to Artin Approximation and the Geometry of Power Series Spaces,
2. the conference Applications of Artin Approximation in Singularity Theory, and
3. the conference Young Researchers in Singularities.

In December 2014, I defended my first bachelor’s thesis, written under the supervision of Herwig Hauser. (The curriculum used to require the preparation of two theses.) The topic of the thesis was “Elliptic curves and Fermat’s Last Theorem“.

In July 2012, I completed my secondary education at Liceo Scientifico “V. Fardella” in Trapani, Italy.

In May 2012, I competed in the Italian national finals of the Mathematical Olympiad in Cesenatico (Italy) and won a bronze medal. As a result, my name was included in the National Excellence Honours Roll (Albo nazionale delle eccellenze) published by the Italian Ministry of Education.

In April 2011, I competed in the 14th edition of the Convivium Galileianum in Potenza (Italy), a national competition for high-school students involving the translation of a scientific or philosophical text from Latin to Italian. I won the competition and as a result, my name was included in the Albo nazionale delle eccellenze.

In both 2011 and 2012, my name was included in the National Excellence Honours Roll (Albo nazionale delle eccellenze) published by the Italian Ministry of Education as a result of my success in national competitions.

Each year from 2015 to 2017, I participated in the VJIMC (Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition) in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

In each of my last four school years, I participated in the Mathematical Olympiad at a local level and, in my last year (2012), also at the national level, where I won a bronze medal.
