In the picture, the grey houses in the background belong to the University Centre as seen from the center of the town.
Obergurgl is located at an elavation of about 2000 m. It first came into the focus of scientists, when Auguste Piccard was forced to end his balloon flight into the stratosphere by landing
on a nearby glacier. In the 1950s and 1960s the University Center Obergurgl of the University of Innsbruck became one of the cradles of modern skiing. Chair lifts may carry you up to
mountains, from where one may see more than a dozen glaciers at a time.
Since Obergurgl is located in a high Alpine area, we advise you to take with you hiking boots and protective clothes.
The temperture may be low, particularly in the morning. Be sure to bring warm clothes also.
