For most of its history, statistical physics has been concerned with systems in thermal equilibrium, developing into a most successful theory of macroscopic matter in terms of microscopic interactions and probabilistic concepts. Successful generalizations to systems weakly perturbed away from equilibrium by “mechanical” and/or “thermal” forces have led to linear response theory, the basis of most of present-day dynamical spectroscopy. However, strongly driven systems far away from equilibrium resisted a theoretical understanding for a surprisingly long time. It needed the combined effort of large-scale computer simulations and of novel theoretical concepts, such as fractal geometry, to break the impasse.

During the conference we shall take the opprtunity to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Denis J. Evans, who has strongly affected the development of nonequilibrium science.

Important notice: Due to a Cycle Marathon in the Oetztal area, the road between Soelden and Obergurgl will be blocked between 13:00 and 19:30 on August 28. This will affect all participants arriving on that day. It will also delay our bus bringing people from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and the Airport to Obergurgl by one hour.
