Desta Alemu (PhD) has been living and working in Vienna for over 30 years. He is a staff member in the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Life Sciences. His lectures are based on Cultural Anthropology and History of Ethiopia. He is a scientific researcher and translator in the Amharic, English and German languages for different faculties at the University of Vienna and other institutions.

Desta has been teaching Amharic since 2001 at the Brigittenau adult education school and Mother Tongue Amharic teacher at Vienna International School from 2008-2014.

He is married (Johanna +) and have one Daughter (Gabriela).  Desta’s hobbies include swimming, cycling, reading and also participating in various social organizations. He is the founder and Chairman of the Ethiopian Cultural Centre in Vienna city and Founder member and General Secretary of the Austrian-Ethiopian Society and Member of the Board of the Tenants’ Advisory Council and Youth and Integration Representative in RBW 27.

Scientific Lectures and Teaching careers at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology

The Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Vienna, Center for Organismal Systems Biologie (COSB), has been and remains a four-field department. We teach, train students, and do research across the four subfields and have faculty in each. Our students learn, at the appropriate level, the fundamentals of the four subfields, their interactions and links with one another, and their relation to other academic fields.

Our mission is to advance, increase, and disseminate knowledge of anthropology through research (both scientific and humanistic), analysis and interpretation, teaching, writing, and other forms of outreach.

Desta Alemu is a Lecturer and Scientific staff member at the Faculty of Life Sciences since 2002 Winter Semester at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology which was headed by the Dean of the Faculty Prof. Dr. Horst Seidler in Vienna University. His lecture Cultural Anthropology and History of Ethiopia is the branch of anthropology in the University of Vienna that studies cultural variation among Ethiopian nationalities and ethnic groups in one side and emphasizing the back ground history of the country from the old history till the modern one.

This Lecture provides a comprehensive knowledge of the diversity of Ethiopian culture, social and material aspects of human existence in East Africa in general and makes a value of teachings and meaningfully to combine the anthropology and history of Ethiopia, because it acts of the oldest complete skeleton of human nature Ardi and Lucy in particular. The mission of this study is to give hints about the history of Ethiopia and its combination of cultural Anthropology aspect to those who are searching for human Fossils in Ethiopia.

Scientific Research and Amharic translation

Desta Alemu has participated by the Scientific Research and Amharic translation of the experimental instructions to study “assessment car Front in Ethiopia” Morphometrics of human facial variation in Ethiopia (2008-2009), particularly Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, study on human facial growth, rating study on the cross-cultural perception of car fronts between Austria and Ethiopia with the leading scientific Prof.Dr.rer.nat. Katrin Schaefer, and Mag. Sonja Windhager. Acknowledgment S. He also participated by the Scientific Researcher and Amharic Translation with Prof. Dr. Gottfried Biewer und Mag.a Margarita Schiemer (2010), Institute of Education Sciences, EE Special Education for Heilpädagogik and Integrativ Education in the context of research at the University of Vienna (CLASDISA) “Research Project classifications Disabilities in the field of Education in different Society and Cultural contexts, Example of Austria, Thailand and Ethiopia.”

Course Content:
Cultural Anthropology and History of Ethiopia is the branch of anthropology in the University of Vienna that studies cultural variation among Ethiopian nationalities and ethnic groups in one side and emphasising the back ground history of the country from the old history till the modern one.

This Lecture provides a comprehensive knowledge of the diversity of Ethiopian culture, social and material aspects therefore active participation in lecture may result in bonus points for examination. This course aims to provide equal opportunities and access for all students; written examination on the given titles and literature which provided during the lecture time and announced through E-Learning. E-Learning is very essential for equal participation but not for calculators those who are expecting to permit for examination only.
