Trans*-activism and the politics of belonging

Chair: Birgit Sauer (IPW | University of Vienna)

Monday, May 20th 2019, 6:30 pm
Hörsaal 3 (H3), NIG, 2nd floor Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna, Austria

“The Transgender Tipping Point”: In 2014, the US magazine Time titled one of the cover stories, describing the far-reaching achievements of Transgender/Trans* activism in terms of legal recognition and visibility of people who live sex beyond the prevailing norms. At the same time, a backlash of trans*rights and intensified trans*phobic violence has been observed worldwide for several years with the strengthening of right-wing populist and Christian-conservative forces. This specific moment in current transgender/trans* politics is the starting point for the lecture. On the basis of empirical results on organizations of trans* activists*, Yv E. Nay discusses the affective implications of the formation of political communities and politics of belonging.

Yv E. Nay currently holds a visiting professorship at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Vienna in the Department of Governance and Gender. Previously, Nay was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona, at the London School of Economics and Political Science LSE, and at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry ICI in Berlin. Nay is currently researching a project entitled “Affective Activism”, which investigates perceived experience and political engagement in Trans*Communities.

After the lecture we invite you to a cosy discussion with a small buffet and drinks.

A cooperation of the Department of Governance and Gender (IPW) and the Department of Gender Research at the University of Vienna.
