Biography

Born in 1957, Dr. phil., Political Scientist. After the studies of Political Science and German Philology at the University of Tübingen and Freie Universität Berlin researcher at the Department of Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin (1987–1992), visiting professor at the Konkuk University in Seoul/Korea (1993/94), visiting professor at the University of Klagenfurt (1994), research associate at the Department of Sociology at the University of Freiburg (1995–1996), assistant at the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna (1996–2001), associate professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna (2001–2006), chairholder of the International Visiting Professorship for Women- and Genderstudies at the Department for Political Science at the University of Mainz (winter term 2001/02), visiting professor at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton/USA (winter term 2003/04), professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna (since 2006), visiting researcher at the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (winter term 2007/08), visiting scholar at the Center for Westeuropean Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle/USA (Summer term 2011, April 2014), visiting researcher at the Center for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) at the Södertörn University in Stockholm (March–June 2012), visiting scholar at the Interdisciplinary Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the Technical University in Berlin (winter term 2015/16).

From 2014 to 2017 Birgit Sauer was Chair of the Research Platform Gender and Agency at the University of Vienna and since 2008 she is spokesperson of the Research Area Gender and Transformation at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. Since 2015 she is member of the Research Platform Mobile Cultures and Societies. Interdisciplinary Studies on Transnational Formation at the University of Vienna. From 2011 to 2016 she was Head of the Doctoral Studies Programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences; from 2016 to 2018 she was Vice Head of the Programme; since 2018 she is Vice Dean. From 2012 to 2018 she was member of the Executive Committee der ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research).

In 2015 she was awarded with the “Österreichischer Staatspreis für Frauen und Geschlechterforschung – Käthe-Leichter-Staatspreis”, in 2017 with the “Wissenschaftspreis der Margaretha Lupac-Stiftung für Parlamentarismus Demokratie des Österreichischen Parlaments”.
