Anke Charton

holds a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies from Leipzig University (2012). She has studied at the Universities of Leipzig, Bologna and Berkeley for her M.A. degree. Research stays have led her to Spain, Italy, the U.S., the U.K., to Austria and to Malta.

Her research areas are within theatre historiography, music theatre & voice, and intersectional gender studies. From 2020-2023, she was the recipent of an Elise Richter Fellowship of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), conducting a project on practices and projections of Siglo de Oro theatre; with a forthcoming concluding monograph.

She has held positions at Detmold University of Music & University of Paderborn, Leipzig University, the Hamburg School of Music and Drama, and is currently TT Professor of “Theatre and Society” at the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies of the University of Vienna. She serves as Vice President of the German association for Theatre Studies (gtw).
