I am an archaeologist with focus on archaeological prospection and interpretation of Roman rural and urban landscapes, specialized on integrative interpretation of prospection results on a landscape scale.
Archaeological prospection has long been used as a search tool to track new “sites”. However, such an approach does not do justice to the methodology, as it robs it of its greatest strength: the ability to record all traces of past human activities on a large scale and without judgement. An essential part of landscape archaeology is the large-scale and comprehensive description of the location, extent and chronological sequence of spatial remains. The use of prospection techniques is essential in this process and enables our focus to shift from the site to the landscape.
