„Crossing Arts & Philosophy: COME ON!”

Vision

If you are interested to enhance your artistic practice further in a close transdisciplinary cooperation with philosophers, who are interested in arts-based-philosophy, this practice-based Research Retreat “Crossing Arts & Philosophy” will provide you the opportunity to develop new transdisciplinary skills in your artistic practice.

The focus of our research retreat lies in a project-oriented cross-over of artistic & philosophical research practices: Art students of mdw/ Angewandte/MUK/GMPU will create––in a close co-operation with philosophy students of the University of Vienna––a transdisciplinary kind of field-performance, in which our research group will collectively stage the outcome of their research in the performance place KHORA. Susanne Valerie Granzer (actress) and Arno Böhler (philosopher) will guide you through the retreat. How the local people from the countryside can be involved into the “field-performance” thereby should be considered seriously.

Lab #1: The Art of Reading. The first gathering of our research group will take place from Thursday, March 31rd, 3pm – Saturday, April 2nd, 7pm. Firstly, we will analyse and discuss the relation of art & philosophy discursively, question their different methods––their practices, their ways of articulation––and counsel texts and art works, coping with this question. (Böhler, A, e.al. (Ed.) (2017). Philosophy On Stage: The Concept of Immanence in Contemporary Art and Philosophy. Performance Philosophy Journal, (Vol. 3/3), Spivak, G. Ch (2013): Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization, Harvard University Press. Ghose, Sri Aurobindo (1999), The Synthesis of Yoga, Pondicherry. Nietzsche, Friedrich (1995): Thus spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None. Translated by Walter Kaufmann, Modern Library / Random House.)

Lab #2: The Art of Staging a Field. The second gathering of our research group will take place from Thursday, May 12th, 3pm till Saturday, May 14th, 7pm. Now it is time to condense the discussions from the first meeting and let them trigger artistic stimuli. Thus, the focus switches from the discursive level to the artistic animation. It is anima, the artistic “soul,” that is called to show up and articulate itself artistically on stage during this second gathering.

Lab #3: The Art of Mattering. In our third and final meeting our transdisciplinary research group will orchestrate a transdisciplinary “field-performance,” which finally will be staged in the performance-center KHORA by the artists and philosophers, who are part of our research-retreat.
