This is a project dealing predominantly with the past. Yet, sometimes one has to work for the future, too – e.g. by proposing a session named “Bureaucratic Interactions” for the European Social Science History Conference 2018, as I did yesterday. If the session is accepted, it will bring together (1) Ghanaian bureaucrats in private companies (who model their behaviour on that of state bureaucrats), (Dmitri van den Bersselaar), (2) anti-corruption campaigns in China (Elisabeth Kaske), (3) persons in interwar Austria who strive to get officially identified by state authorities without having the necessary and complete proofs to testify that they really are who they claim to be (Sigrid Wadauer) and (4) Austrian public employees of the interwar period who commit misconduct in office (moi) … Keep your fingers crossed!
