project: “Imagining Europe. Conceptions of Europe and Changing Statehood in Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, and Serbia”

March 2005 to March 2006: Project team member (IPW), project leader: Vedran Džihič
(financed by: Ministry of Education, Science and Culture)

The project investigated images and constructions of ‘Europe’ in public discourses in the Balkan region. In the context of (potential) EU-integration of post-Yugoslav states, ‘Europe’ signifies hopes for economic growth and political modernization as well as fears of international interference and loss of independence and cultural identity. The comparative analysis showed that these images are gendered and employed to legitimize the agendas of different political elites.

The project resulted in the book „Europa – verflucht begehrt Europa-Vorstellungen in Bosnien-Herzegowina, Kroatien und Serbien“ (German, published 2006 by Braumüller)
