About me

I am a Senior Postdoc Fellow (FWF) at the Department of Political Science of the University of Vienna and an Affiliate of the Research Platform "Governance of digital practices". I earned a PhD (with distinction) in Political Science (2013) and received a MA (with distinction) in Political Science, Media and Communication Studies (2005) at the University of Vienna.

My research examines how the use of digital platforms is transforming the supply chain of illicit drug markets and alters barriers to entry. In doing so, I combine approaches from economic sociology, political economy, criminology and science and technology studies and conduct netnographic research on socio-technical practices of cryptomarket actors.

I am editor of Drugs, Darknet and Organised Crime (Nomos, 2019) and serve as co-editor of the journal Kriminologisches Journal. I also had the pleasure of organising the 31st Annual Conference of the European Society for Social Drug Research (ESSD) in 2020.

My current research project examines how social interactions enable market exchange on anonymous online markets for drugs. The project is funded with an Erwin-Schrödinger Fellowship by the Austrian Science Fund. As part of the Schrödinger Fellowship, I was a visiting researcher at the Department of Sociology of the University of Essex (2018-2019) and the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law of the University of Oslo (2017-2018).

Prior to the Schrödinger Fellowship, I was a guest researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin (2016-2017), lecturer at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science of the Free University of Berlin (2017), and visiting fellow at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) of the Jacobs University Bremen (2011).

As a Senior Researcher at the Vienna Centre for Societal Security (2013–2017), I have developed, conducted and coordinated collaborative security research projects funded by the European Commission (FP7 programme) and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (KIRAS programme).

Earlier international collaborative projects include Virtual centre of excellence for research support and coordination on societal security (SOURCE), Foresight Tools for Responding to cascading effects in a crisis (FORTESS), Addressing and Preventing of Organized Financial Crime with Virtual Currencies (BITCRIME) and Virtual Drug Trafficking - A New Challenge in Combating Organized Crime (VIDRO).
