The Modern Metro (U-Bahn), Phase 4 (2010-2017)
The fourth stage of subway construction began in 2010. It consists of the following line extensions:
- Exetension of line U1 from Reumannplatz to Oberlass (4,6 km).
- Extension of line U2 from Aspernstrasse to Seestadt (4,2 km).
Once this stage is completed, the network will be 82,8 km long.
Line U1-south
Construction started in 2011. Contrary to initial plans, the line was not extended to Rothneusiedl; instead Oberlaa was chosen as the terminus, mostly due to financial reasons.
Line U2-east
Construction started in 2010; the extension, entirely on elevated track, was opened three years later.
