Homero Gil de Zúñiga is doctor in Political Science by the Universidad Europea de Madrid and also pursued a Ph.D. in Mass Communication with a minor in Digital Media from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He participated in the National Communication Association’s Doctoral Honors Program at University of Oklahoma, and the Summer Doctoral Program of the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), at University of Oxford, UK.

After completing his studies he was appointed Research Fellow in the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University. Dr. Gil de Zúñiga also continued his research as Professor at University of Texas – Austin (Associate Professor), USA, where he first directed the Center for Journalism & Communication Research (CJCR) and more recently, the Digital Media Research Program (DMRP) within the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life.

Currently, Prof. Gil de Zúñiga holds the Medienwandel Professorship at University of Vienna, Austria, where he leads the Media Innovation Lab (MiLab). Similarly, he serves or has served as a Research Fellow at the Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) at Princeton University, and Research Fellow at Universidad Diego Portales de Chile, as well as he collaborates in different capacities with other research centers and colleagues at Universidad de Monterey de MéxicoUniversidad Externado de ColombiaCity University of Hong KongUniversity of California – Santa Barbara, and Northwestern University,

In general, his research addresses the influence of new technologies and digital media over people's daily lives, as well as the effect of such use on the overall democratic process.

He has published several books and book chapters with prestigious academic publishers such as Oxford University PressCambridge University PressRoutledge and Sage. Dr. Gil de Zúñiga has presented over 100 articles at scientific meetings in the field of Journalism, Communication, and Political Science at different professional organizations and Universities around the globe (i.e., Argentina, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom, and USA), receiving research awards from the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), and the International Communication Association (ICA). Furthermore, he has held different administrative positions at several of these associations across these past years, becoming the Communication Technology’s Division Head of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

In this capacity of expert, he also serves as ad hoc reviewer for over 50 scientific journals, and he sits at over 20 editorial boards as for instance, Journal of CommunicationJournal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Human Communication Research, Journal of Information Technology & PoliticsInternational Journal of CommmunicationSocial Science Computer ReviewInternational Journal of E-Politics, Journalism & Mass Communication QuarterlyJournal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism & Communication Monographs, Revista Latina de Comunicación Social, Revista Mexicana de Opinión Pública, and Cuadernos.info among others.

Dr. Gil de Zúñiga has received more than 50 grants, research awards, and recognitions as principal investigator, co-principal investigator or as executive member, totaling over 4 million dollars. Lastly, he also serves as academic source to inform and help journalists in their reporting (i.e., CNNUSA TodayAl JazeeraRadio Televisión Española(RTVE), Dallas Morning NewsEl Tiempo (Colombia), ABC NewsNational Public Radio (NPR), FOX News and CBS News, etc).
