Abstract:
Mixtures of elongated molecules with different lengths tend to demix
upon compression. Our earlier simulations showed that binary
Gay-Berne systems demix into a regular layered structure, the
longer particles assembling in smectic strata. To gain a better
understanding of the phenomenon we now investigate simpler
model systems made up of (a) hard spherocylinders and spheres;
(b) hard ovals and spheres.
