Studied cultural anthropology and Romance philology at the University of Vienna (PhD 1988). 1991/1992 Fulbright Scholar at the University of Arizona/Tucson. Long-term archaeological fieldwork in Belize. Since 2005 venia docendi at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Vienna. From 2015–2019 employed at the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology, Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2014–2019 scientific editor of the journal Archaeologia Austriaca. Principal investigator in four projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF (1997, 1998, 2000–2002, 2006–2009) and one project funded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Fund FCT (2002–2005) at Oporto, Portugal. From 2016–2019 Principal Investigator in the HERA JRP III UP project "Deploying the Dead: Artefacts and human bodies in socio-cultural transformations" at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
