Josef Schöffel Preis 2008 Josef Schöffel (1832-1910) war Bürgermeister von Mödling (Niederösterreich). Seinem unerschrockenen Eintreten und seiner 1870 bis 1873 geführten beispiellosen Kampagne ist es zu verdanken, dass der Wienerwald nicht abgeholzt und somit gerettet wurde. Ihm zu Ehren wird alle drei Jahre der Josef Schöffel-Förderungspreis für hervorragende Leistungen zum Schutz der heimischen Natur verliehen. Am 18. September 2008 erhielt Erich Eder diesen Preis für seine wissenschaftlich-pädagogisch-publizistische Tätigkeit, seine aktive Tätigkeit in Naturschutzorganisationen und konkrete Maßnahmen für den Naturschutz (siehe "Gefährdung und Schutz"). 1997 war dieser Preis für die intensive Forschungstätigkeit und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit über Urzeitkrebse an Eders Doktorvater, Prof. Walter Hödl vergeben worden. |

Förderungspreis der Stadt Wien für Wissenschaft und Volksbildung 2004 Förderungspreise der Stadt Wien werden in den Sparten Musik, Literatur, bildende Kunst und Architektur sowie für Wissenschaft und Volksbildung vergeben. Sie sind Auszeichnungen, die für eine bisherige hervorragende Gesamttätigkeit als Ad-Personam-Dotation vergeben werden. Vom amtsführenden Stadtrat wird eine ehrenamtliche Fachjury bestellt, die die Empfänger der Förderungspreise nominieren. Erich Eder erhielt den Förderungspreis 2004 unter anderem mit folgenden Begründungen: "...öffentliches Engagement im Naturschutz und in der (Allgemein)Bildung..." "...im Internet und mit populärwissenschaftlichen Ausstellungen machte er die Groß-Branchiopoden einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt..." "...bei seiner Vortragstätigkeit volksbildnerisch tätig..." "...scheut den öffentlichen Konflikt mit Pseudo- und Parawissenschaften nicht..." "...publizierte und begutachtete in international renommierten wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften...". |

Theodor Körner Preis 1999 Theodor Körner (1873-1957), als Sozialdemokrat 1934 und 1944 inhaftiert, war von 1951 bis zu seinem Tod der erste direkt vom Volk gewählte Bundespräsident Österreichs. Als Bürgermeister von Wien (1945-1951) kümmerte er sich um den Wiederaufbau der Stadt, als Bundespräsident verhinderte er 1953 den Eintritt des VdU (Vorgängerpartei der FPÖ) in eine Konzentrationsregierung. Der 1953 von Arbeiterkammer und Österreichischem Gewerkschaftsbund (ÖGB) verwirklichte Theodor Körner-Fonds zur Förderung von Wissenschaft und Kunst verleiht alljährlich Preise in den Bereichen Naturwissenschaften, Geistes-, Rechts- und Sozialwissenschaften und Kunst. Unter den früheren Preisträgern finden sich viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten wie der Maler Christian Ludwig Attersee, die Autoren Christine Busta und Jörg Mauthe, die Komponisten Friedrich Cerha und Erich Eder de Lastra, die Zoologen Rupert Riedl und Antal Festetics, der Psychoanalytiker Hans Strotzka oder der Journalist und spätere Wiener Bürgermeister Helmut Zilk. Der Theodor-Körner-Förderungspreis 1999 (Naturwissenschaften/Biologie) erging am 7.3.2000 an Erich Eder für das v.a. gemeinsam mit Stefan Richter von der HU Berlin durchgeführte Projekt "Erstbeschreibung der Männchen von Limnadia lenticularis". |

Josef Schöffel Award, 2008 Josef Schoeffel (1832-1910) was major of the city of Mödling (Lower Austria). He early recognized the importance of the forests as recreation areas. With his enthousiastic speeches and publications he explained the necessity of forest conservation. Due to his ambitions and continuous fight he is known today as the "Saver of the Viennese Forest". On September 18, 2008, Erich Eder was awarded this prize for his scientific, pedagogic, and journalistic activity, his work in nature protection organizations and for his concrete conservational measures (see "Threats & conservation"). In 1997, the same award had been given to Eder's professor, Walter Hödl, for his scientific and public activities on the large branchiopods. |

Encouragement Prize of the City of Vienna for Science and National Education, 2004 The Encouragement Prizes of the City of Vienna are donated for music, literature, arts & architecture, and for science & national education. They are awarded as an ad-personam dotation for the life achievement so far. An independent jury nominates the receivers of the Encouragement Prizes. Erich Eder was awarded an Encouragement Prize in 2004. Some of the statements of reasons were as follows: "...public engagament in nature conservation and general education..." "...via internet and pupolar scientific exhibitions, he has made the large branchiopods known to a broad public..." "...engaged in national education with public talks..." "...does not avoid the public conflict with pseudo- and parasciences..." "...has published and reviewed for well known journals...". |

Theodor Körner Award, 1999 Theodor Koerner (1873-1957), imprisoned in 1934 and 1944 for being a social democrat, in 1951 was the first Federal President to be elected by the people. Major of the Austrian capital Vienna after the Second World War (1945-1951), he was engaged for the restoration of the city. In 1953 he successfully foiled the participation of the nationalist VdU party (today FPOe) in a government coalition. In 1953, the Chamber of Labour (AK) and the Austrian Trade Union Federation (OeGB) founded the Theodor-Koerner Fund for Science and Arts, donating yearly awards in the sections natural sciences, social sciences, law and arts. In the past, several well known persons were awarded, such as the painter Christian Ludwig Attersee, the authors Christine Busta and Joerg Mauthe, the composers Friedrich Cerha and Erich Eder de Lastra, the zoologists Rupert Riedl and Antal Festetics, the psychoanalist Hans Strotzka, and the journalist and later Major of Vienna, Helmut Zilk. In 1999, Erich Eder was awarded the Theodor-Koerner-Foerderungspreis (natural sciences) for the project "Description of Limnadia lenticularis males" which was performed mainly together with Stefan Richter (Humboldt University Berlin). The award was presented on March 7, 2000. |
