CuRe brings together five research teams from Austria, Croatia, Germany, Serbia and Sweden. Its goal is to better understand the shift in everyday life towards polarization and radicalization that has occurred in recent years, and the successes of right-wing movements and parties in Europe. Our research starts from the premise that cultures of rejection emerge as the result of crises in Europe’s democracies, as well as due to changes in national institutions and civil society. Since rejection is a threat to all forms of social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, the project seeks to study the conditions that have led to the rejection of, among else, immigration, political elites, media and cultural values such as gender equality and sexual liberty.

Cooperation Group „Normalizing the Far Right“

From February 2022 to December 2023, Prof. Dr. Birgit Sauer is co-coordinator of the Cooperation Group „Normalizing the Far Right“ at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (ZIF) at Bielefeld University.
„The goal of this cooperation group is to detect the mechanisms that spread and normalize the far-right thinking, and to depict how the boundaries of the normal are shifted through the transformation of what is speakable and doable within democracy. The project is not dedicated to the study of extremism but to the permeation of the far-right ideologemes in the public sphere. This cooperation group therefore adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and works with international comparisons. We aim to promote a dialogue among international scholars in sociology, political science, law, history, media, and cultural studies. We will focus on mechanisms that normalize the far right, their effects on political culture and institutions, and also analyze democratic resilience and resistance within politics and civil society“.

Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe
The overall objective of the project is to stimulate inclusion of diverse groups of migrant children by adopting child-centered approach to migrant children integration on educational and policy level. Stemming from the need to revisit the existing integration policies, the research project aims at comprehensive examination of contemporary integration processes of migrant children in order empower them. The project is problem-driven and exploratory at the same time. Its exploratory part mainly concerns child-centered approach to understanding integration challenges, migrant needs and their well-being. However, the findings of the open-ended exploratory research will be used in an explicitly problem-driven way – with an aim to stimulate migrant inclusion, to empower migrants and build their skills already within the (participatory) research.

Zur Veranstaltung:
Im Rahmen des von der Europäischen Union geförderten Projektes MiCREATE haben wir in den letzten Jahren die aktuellen Rahmenbedingungen für die Integration von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund an österreichischen Schulen analysiert. Ziel unseres Projektes ist es, ein politisches und gesellschaftliches Verständnis von Integration zu entwickeln, das die Perspektive von Kindern und Jugendlichen miteinbezieht. Hierfür haben wir mit einem kindzentrierten Ansatz gearbeitet, das bedeutet, dass wir das individuelle kindliche Erleben in den Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung gestellt haben. Wir haben mit Kindern und Jugendlichen Umfragen, Interviews und Fokusgruppen durchgeführt sowie Toolkits für Lehrer*innen evaluiert und verbessert. Das daraus resultierte Wissen, welches sich auf den Umgang mit Vielfalt, der Unterstützung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationserfahrungen, Tools für den Unterricht und auf Konfliktprävention konzentriert, wollen wir nun in einem halbtägigen Workshop an österreichisches Schulpersonal weitergeben.

Im Anschluss an den Workshop wird es die Möglichkeit des informellen Austauschs und Raum für Nachfragen geben.
