The last number In Venice houses started being numbered during the first Habsburg rule (1797-1805). The respective ordinance, dated September 24, 1801, stipulated that numbers should be placed within a white triangle that was to be painted onto the house beforehand, using black colour made of either animal charcoal or oil. At the same time street names were written onto the houses and a new cadastre of Venetian districts was established. In 1841 the city again underwent renumbering which has been in place until now: In order to enable the distinction between new and old numbering schemes this time houses were marked with red colour.
