    • Computing power reserved to research grade work
    • Before attaining graduate status, one had to do one's numerics by hand
    • Thus one tried to concentrate on analytically solvable approximations
    • Nonlinear DE, random motion, simulation of many-particle systems, etc. remained objects of desire...
    • Around 1980: PC revolution

  • 1980-now:
    • Computers widely available, but used primarily for other things than computing
    • Important to raise the awareness for computation (not computers!) in high school and beginning science students
    • How? - Confront students with challenging problems (anharmonic oscillator?), then give them tools to solve them (Størmer algorithm?)
