2. Exact Expressions for ${\rm\cal {F}}_{ex}[\rho ]$

Functional integration (see 2.1) leads to exact formulae for the excess free energy. Generally, these expressions are useful only after some further simplification. There is one case, the ``Tonks gas'' in an external field, that may treated without additional assumptions (see 2.2).
