Jaroslaw J. Szymczak jest absolwentem Politechniki Wrocławskiej, gdzie uzyskał tytuł magistra inżyniera pracując pod kierunkiem Prof. Szczepana Roszaka . W latach 2002-06, pracował w grupie Prof. Jerzego Leszczyńskiego na Jackson State University, gdzie skończył studia podyplomowe uzyskując tytuł magistra i doktora. Obecnie prowadzi badania naukowe w grupie QCCD współpracując z Prof. Hansem Lischką w Instytucie Chemii Teoretycznej na Uniwersytecie Wiedeńskim. Jego badania koncentrują się na zrozumieniu natury ulttraszybkich procesów w systemach molekularnych zachodzących po fotowzbudzeniu. Poza tym jego zaintersowania naukowe dotyczą w badaniach teoretycznych nad charakterem mikrosolwatacji w małych klastrach w fazie gazowej.
