The Basic Philosophical Idea

The Controversy about the Status of String Physics

Scientific Underdetermination

Scientific Realism and String Theory

Other Questions

The project aims at analysing the philosophical implications of string theory. String theory occupies a highly influential position in fundamental physics today. It differs significantly in various respects from other physical theories and its current status is a matter of controversial debate among physicists. All of these points suggest that a philosophical analysis of string physics may be important for a better understanding of contemporary fundamental physics and can have a stimulating effect on philosophy of science. The project work rests on an analysis of the characteristics which set string physics apart from other fields of research in physics. This analysis is then applied at different levels to discuss three kinds of questions: How can the current debate on the status of string physics be adequately understood? In which way do important topics in philosophy of science look differently when discussed in the context of string theory? To what extent can the philosphical issues raised in the context of string theory alter our general understanding of the scientific process? A short sketch of each of these kinds of analysis shall be offered on the following pages.
