Blog: Climate crisis and Covid crisis - symptoms of the same faults!

About this Blog

This is a personal blog of Petra Seibert. I am an associate professor of meteorology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (Universität für Bodenkultur Wien - BOKU) (see my BOKU web site), and lecturer at University of Vienna. From 2012 to 2014, I was professor of theoretical meteorology at University of Vienna. For more information, see my University of Vienna home page.

My primary field of expertise is atmospheric transport modelling in relation to air pollution and radioactivity including interdisciplinary aspects. I have also done some work related to climate topics. For about 20 years, I have been a member of the Austrian delegation to a policy-making organ of a Vienna-based international organisation, namely the (technical) Working Group B of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban-Treaty Organisation (CTBTO/PrepCom), a mixed forum of scientists and diplomats. This brought me into the scientific advisory board of the Hamburg Institute of Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH) (2012-2020), and so I became also interested in international politics.

I did not focus very much on external communication of my work until a few years ago. However, the urgency of stopping anthropogenic climate change - global warming in particular, and the state of our planet and our global human society in general (January 2020: Doomsday Clock set to 100 s before midnight - closer than ever. Where will it be now?) lead me to do more in that direction.

The Corona virus crisis now has suddenly sharpened the bifurcation (to speak in terms of system theory) towards which we are heading. We have a greater chance for entering the path of global transformation towards the 1.5-degree world (and similarly with respect to all the other global threats), or to continue the current path towards catastrophic developments - and more and more people realise that we are right now experiencing one of those. Therefore, I want to try in this blog to collect some selected links to documents and initiatives I deem important, and share some of my personal thoughts and analyses.
