Black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) Black backed jackals are small, reddish brown to ginger canids of Southern Africa. They are extremely flexible and inhabit almost every environment in Southern Africa, from suburbs of large cities to deserts. Black backed jackals live in monogamous pairs wich mate for life, they are often found in family groups. They are highly social, subadults often stay with their parents to help raise younger cubs.
