Bretagne

In May 2001, we travelled through Germany and France by car. In Germany we visited a couple of friends in different cities of Germany (Berlin, Köln,..)and then we travelled around the Bretagne for five days (unfortunately we didn't have more time). Here is a short "diary" of our Bretagne trip:

We travelled by car counterclockwise around the whole peninsula which includes the majority of the Bretagne and back to Paris following the Loire.

25.05.: We left Paris, passing by Rennes to stop by Le Mont Saint-Michel. We immediately loved this impressive medieval town with its big city walls and narrow streets. Unfortunately the town was pretty crowded, there were long lines in front of the museums. But we wanted to go on anyway, our next stop was Saint Maló, where we visted the mariner's church of St. Vincent. On the city walls, it is possible to walk around almost the whole town. From there, the view at the sea is beautiful. In the harbor of St. Maló we found huge container ships from all over the world (I didn't know St. Maló was an important harbor, did you ?). Closeby, there was a nice little camping area, where we spent our first night in the Bretgane.

26.05.: This day, we first visited Cap Fréhel. From this lighthouse, the view over the steep rocks falling straight into the sea is breathtaking. If you like climbing, it's the perfect area for climbing along the rocks of the shore. Just be careful - the parking area of Cap Fréhel is unattended, some thieves stole a backpack out of our car there. Don't leave anything in the car ! We were climbing around Cap Fréhel all morning, watching the cormoranes and seagulls breading on the rocks. Then we proceeded to Les Sables d'Or, said to be the most beautiful beach of the Northern Bretagne. And really, the beach is wonderful ! At Saint-Pol-de-Léon we found a nice camping area directly at the rocky seashore where we stayed the second night.

27.05.:After Saint-Pol-de-Léon and Cléder we arrived at Brest. We had a short walk at the harbour of Brest but then we went on. Brest isn't really a beautiful town. Our next stop was Pte. de Penhir, again famous for its rocky shore. At Pte. de Penhir there is a bunker from Second World War, which we also visited. We found an artificial cave under the bunker but in lack of a flashlight we couldn't explore it further. Nearby there is a natural Cave, but unfortunately season hadn't started yet so it was still closed. So, we started to search for a camping area for the night, this search took us straight to Carnac, the next place we wanted to visit, and at Plouharnel, closeby Carnac, we found one. It wasn't as small as the others we had stayed at before, but it had a beautiful, long sandy beach.

28.05.:In the morning, we visited the world famous megalithes of Carnac. We hadn't expected them beeing scattered over such a large area, so it took us nearly until lunchtime to visit all of them. At La Boule there is a salt marsh, a really interesting landscape. Finally, we visited the Ocearium at Croisic, where our friend Cherry immediately fell in love with an octopus. It seemed that the octopus felt the same for her, since he seemed to enjoy her stroking and cuddling him. The Ocearium of Croisic is really worth a visit, since they have lot of animals there you normally don't see: Limulus sp., Sea Spiders, Nautilus and Sea Turtles. Searching a camping area for the night, we passed through Pornichet, a little town which reminded us strongly to St. Tropez so we left again. Sinc there were no camping areas on the way we had to proceed to St. Nazaire, crossing the impressive Loire bridge of St. Nazaire. At the south shore of the Loire we found a camping area - quite strange since it was inhabited by French seniors with little gardens in front of their camping cars but with a nice view over the industrial harbour of St. Nazaire. No joke, the thousand lights of the harbour during nighttime and the reflections of the lights in the sea were really beautiful :-) !

29.05.:We started our journey back to Paris, passing by the castles along the shores of the Loire. First, we stopped at Nantes to visit the Palace of Justice, a new building with great architecture, especally admired by our friend Mario, who is an architect. After a little odyssey through Nantes we found our way out of the town, starting our tour at the Loire. The first castle, Ancenis, was closed as well as the second one, Serrant. Finally, we reached Angers, but meanwhile it was lunchtime and just too hot to do any sightseeing. We enjoyed the shades produced by the castle and then tried to reach Paris before anybody would melt (our old car doesn't have air condition).

30.05.: Back from the "wild nature" of the Bretagne,we did a one day trip to Dsineyland Paris. Nothing more to say, funny as always :-)!

31.05.: Our last day in Paris, we did a little city tour, mainly visiting La Défense, later on we relaxed a little bit in order to get fit for the long drive back to Vienna.
