Spiegel menschlicher Behaltnuss. Manuscript, Regensburg, ca.1450
In its typological method the Spiegel is related
to the Biblia pauperum, but it adds
extensive text parts explaining Old Testament
prefiguration and New Testament
fulfilment, in which use is also made of extra-biblical
sources. 24 of the originally
40 leaves of this manuscript have been preserved,
containing 96 miniatures by
several masters. The intention must have been
to provide frames for the miniatures,
as the scene in each miniature has been cut as
if by imaginary lines, occasionally
resulting in the rather conspicuous absence of
figures necessary for the narrative.
