Thomas a Kempis, [Imitatio Christi] De vier boeken der
naarvolging Christi. Amsterdam, Jacob Lescailje,
1663
Dutch, rhymed version, in a binding with a decorated edge ascribed to
Albertus Magnus (fl. 1669-86), the foremost bookbinder of
Amsterdam in the 17th century. A motif he often used in binding are
the exquisite borders of birds in vine foliage, which was also used
here.
Boethius, Opera. Basel, Heinrich Petri, 1564
Boethius’ work was also important for the transmission of Pythagorean
and Platonic thought on music and arithmetic. Harmony and proportion represent
order in the
universe, while the study of these will eventually lead to knowledge
of the divine. Boethius’ ideas were to find practical application for instance
in the proportions of
the Cathedral of Chartres.
Copy with fore-edge painting by Vecellio from the collection of father
and son Pillone (late 16th century).
