New Records - Specialists
-
Red Octopus, Josefstädter Strasse 99, 1080 Wien, www.redoctopus.at
Has closed.
-
Rote Laterne, Riemergasse 11, 1010 Wien, www.rotelaterne.at Open Mon-Fri 9.30am-12.30pm and 5.30pm-11.30pm.
Housed in the Porgy & Bess jazz club, with very unorthodox opening hours (open mornings and evenings, closed in the afternoon). Extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. They have all the classics and many unexpected items, and no filler material whatsoever. Decent prices too.
Formats: CD, DVD.
Average prices: Mid-price €11, regular releases €20.
How to get there: subway U3 or tram 2 (Stubentor)
New Records - Generalists
-
Audio Center, Judenplatz 9, 1010 Wien, www.audiocenter.at
Generally a decent selection. They're good on vinyl, but unfortunately rather pricey. Also has second-hand items, but most of the time these aren't any cheaper than the new records.
Formats: CD, Vinyl.
Average prices: Mid-price CDs €15, regular CDs €20, vinyl €15-€45.
How to get there: subway U1 or U4, or tram 1 or 2 (Schwedenplatz)
-
EMI Austria, Kärntnerstrasse 30, 1010 Wien, www.emimusic.at
The jazz section is on the second floor and good for the occasional find, but overall disappointing and expensive. Considering that EMI owns Blue Note, you'd expect them to stock at least a few more titles from the Blue Note catalogue.
Formats: CD.
Average prices: Mid-price €14, regular releases €20.
How to get there: subway U1 or U3 (Stephansplatz)
-
Extraplatte, Währinger Strasse 46, 1090 Wien, www.extraplatte.at
Specializing in world music and classical, they do have a corner for some of the more excentric species of jazz, too.
Formats: CD.
Average prices: Mid-price €13, regular releases €20.
How to get there: tram 5, 33, 37, 38, 40, 41 or 42 (Spitalgasse)
-
Ohrenschmaus, Untere Augartenstrasse 5, 1020 Wien
Weird mixture of new and used records, often it's hard to say which is which. Medium-sized and variable selection - has the classics and is always good for surprise finds.
Formats: CD, Vinyl.
Average prices: new releases around €18, used vary highly.
How to get there: tram 31 (Obere Donaustrasse)
-
Saturn, Mariahilfer Strasse 42-48, 1070 Wien (Gerngroß store, 5th floor), www.saturn.at
Formerly one of the biggest selections in Vienna, but this has now almost completely dried out. About every other month a huge shipment from the major labels arrives, but these items disappear quickly, and between shipments the shelves are often in a sad state.
Formats: CD, Vinyl reissues.
Average prices: Special offers €8, Mid-price €10, regular releases €18.
How to get there: subway U3 (Neubaugasse)
-
Saturn, Millennium City, 1200 Wien, www.saturn.at
Used to have a fairly thin selection, but has become slightly better over the past few months. Nothing too esoteric, but a good selection from the major labels, and prices are generally lower than at the Gerngroß branch.
Formats: CD, Vinyl reissues.
Average prices: Special offers €8, Mid-price €10, regular releases €18.
How to get there: subway U6 or suburban rail S1, S2, S3, S5, S6, S7, S8, S9 or S45 (Handelskai)
-
Substance, Westbahnstrasse 16, 1070 Wien, www.substance-store.com
They are specializing in indie, alternative, dub and electronica, but there is a small jazz section tucked away in a corner, mostly with vinyl reissues, that is always good for surprise finds.
Formats: Vinyl reissues, CD.
Average prices: Mid-price €14, regular releases €18.
How to get there: tram 49 (Zieglergasse) or subway U3 (Neubaugasse)
Second Hand Record Shops - large jazz section
-
Disc Point, Otto-Bauer-Gasse 16, 1060 Wien, www.discpoint.at
Looks small from the outside, but is remarkably big once you're inside. The jazz section is in the back room and is huge in quantity, but unfortunately rather poor in quality. However, the "Neuzugänge" (incoming) box in the front room often contains very pleasant surprises, so this shop is certainly worth checking out. They also have a regular stall at the Wienzeile flea market (see below), but they usually just take a few boxes from the shop and put them there.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: subway U3 (Zieglergasse)
-
Moses Records, Lerchenfelder Strasse 33, 1070 Wien, www.moses-records.at
Fair selection, nothing overwhelming, but good items keep popping up. Low prices, so it's worth checking out at any rate.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: tram 46 (Strozzigasse)
-
Scout Records, Capistrangasse 3, 1060 Wien
Very good selection, lots of interesting titles. Lots of real collectors' items, though these are often a bit pricey. Be sure to also check out the cardboard boxes under the shelves and the special offers in the back room. They also have a regular stall at the Wienzeile flea market (see below), where they sell records that they do not have on display in the shop.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: subway U3 (Neubaugasse, exit Kirchengasse)
-
Teuchtler, Windmühlgasse 10, 1060 Wien
Smallish shop with a huge selection of used stuff. There are shelves full of records everywhere and the uninitiated will find it impossible to figure out the shelving system, so ask the friendly staff if you can't find anything. Their real speciality is classical music, but they do have a fairly good jazz section.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: subway U3 (Neubaugasse, exit Kirchengasse)
Second Hand Record Shops - small jazz section
-
Fischer Music & Chronicle, Webgasse 41, 1060 Wien
A huge shop with used items of all kinds, but their jazz section is somewhat small and has a fairly strange selection of titles. However, if you are looking for really obscure stuff, you may want to check it out.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: subway U3 (Zieglergasse)
-
Sing Sing, Neustiftgasse 19 and 23, 1060 Wien
They do have a few jazz records, but mostly specialise in other things.
Formats: Vinyl, CD.
How to get there: subway U2 or U3 (Volkstheater)
-
Flea Market, Linke Wienzeile between Kettenbrückengasse and Eggerthgasse, 1060 Wien (Saturdays only)
The Flea Market every Saturday on Linke Wienzeile is always good for unexpected discoveries. There is a fair share of regular/professional dealers there, as well as people who have merely been cleaning out their attic, so expect to find just about anything. The stalls open around 6 a.m. and close at some point during the afternoon, so come early.
Formats: Everything.
How to get there: subway U4 (Kettenbrückengasse)
