Closed Lines and Stations

  • Linie 18G
    Route: Ostbahnhof - tram route 118 - Westbahnhof - metro route G - Heiligenstadt
    Opened: October 20th, 1925 / Closed: February 19th, 1945
This unique line, which was operated partly as a tram and partly as a metro, was closed during World War II and not re-opened again.

  • Line WD
Route: Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Danube Canal - Heiligenstadt
    Opened: October 20th, 1925 / Closed: May 7th, 1976
The line was closed when the first section of line U4 between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke was opened. It was replaced by lines U4, WG and GW.

  • Line DG
Route: Hietzing - Wien valley - Danube Canal - Outer Ring - Meidling Hauptstrasse
    Opened: October 20th, 1925 / Closed: March 31st, 1978
The line was closed when line U4 was extended to Schottenring, thus severing the link between the Outer Ring and Danube Canal lines. It was replaced by lines U4, GD and W.

  • Lines WG and GW
Route line WG: Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Danube Canal - Outer Ring - Meidling Hauptstrasse
Route line GW: Meidling Hauptstrasse - Outer Ring - Danube Canal - Wien valley - Hütteldorf
    Opened: May 7th, 1976 / Closed: March 31st, 1978
These two lines, which served as replacement for line WD, were closed when line U4 was extended to Schottenring, and were replaced by lines U4, GD and W.

  • Line W
Route: Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Danube Canal - Schottenring (1978)
               Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Karlsplatz (1978-1980)
Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Meidling Hauptstrasse (1980-1981)
    Opened: April 1st, 1978 / Closed: August 28th, 1981
This provisional line (a replacement for line WD) was gradually replaced by line U4.

  • Lines U2/4 and U4/2
    Route line U2/4: Karlsplatz - U2 - Schottenring - U4 - Hietzing
    Route line U4/2: Hietzing - U4 - Schottenring - U2 - Karlsplatz
    Opened: September 5th, 1981 / Closed: September 25th, 1981
These lines were conceived to increase the attractivity of the rather short line U2 and to create a metro ring around the inner city similar to the Stadtbahn lines GD and DG. However, the project failed miserably when services on both lines U2 and U4 were so severely disrupted that the lines were closed after only 17 days of service and all plans for branches on other lines were discarded.

  • Line GD
Route: Meidling Hauptstrasse - Outer Ring - Danube Canal - Wien valley - Hietzing (1925-1978)
Meidling Hauptstrasse - Outer Ring - Friedensbrücke (1978-1985)
Gumpendorfer Strasse - Outer Ring - Friedensbrücke (1985-1989)
    Opened: October 20th, 1925 / Closed: October 6th, 1989
The main section of this line was closed when the connection between the Outer Ring and Danube Canal lines was severed in 1978; it remained in operation on the Outer Ring until it was replaced by line U6.

  • Line G
Route: Hütteldorf - Wien valley - Outer Ring - Heiligenstadt (1926-1945)
Meidling Hauptstrasse - Outer Ring - Heiligenstadt (1954-1985)
Gumpendorfer Strasse - Outer Ring - Heiligenstadt (1985-1989)
    Opened: September 18th, 1954 / Closed: October 6th, 1989
The Outer Ring line was completely replaced by line U6.

Closed track sections

  • Lines G and GD:
During the conversion to new metro the track between the bridge over the Wienzeile and Meidling Hauptstrasse station was removed and completely rebuilt. Lines U4 and U6 now intersect at a new station at Längenfeldgasse. The only clue to the former interchange at Meidling Hauptstrasse is an overly wide platform where a third track used to be.

  • Line U4:
When the new interchange at Längenfeldgasse was built, part of the old tunnel near Margaretengürtel was abandoned and is now used as a siding. Similarly the old tunnel between Friedensbrücke and Spittelau was abandoned and a new one built in its place.

  • Line U6:
During construction of line U3 at Westbahnhof, most of the existing tunnel of line U6, including the station, was abandoned and completely rebuilt.
When the extension to Floridsdorf was built, the track between Heiligenstädter Strasse and Friedensbrücke was largely removed to make place for the new station at Spittelau. The interchange between lines U4 and U6 at Friedensbrücke was closed. When the extension was opened, the section to Heiligenstadt and the station there were closed, too.
