Maps and pictures

All maps on this site were designed by the author, except where noted. They are offered under Creative Commons licenses.

The picture of the blue U-Bahn cube is by Gregor Tatschl and is used under a Creative Commons license.

Pictures and photographs are used with the kind permission of their authors; in the cases where I was unable to contact them successfully, they are used in accordance with § 54 (1), Z. 3 and Z. 5 of the Austrian copyright law (Urheberrechtsgesetz). Anyone feeling that § 54 does not apply to their picture(s), please contact me. The picture(s) in question will be removed immediately. Pictures with author credits on them are not covered by the Creative Commons license and may not be used freely.

The pictures which I did not take myself were scanned from the following publications:

  • Horn, Alfred, Wiener Stadtbahn: 90 Jahre Stadtbahn, 10 Jahre U-Bahn. Wien: Bohmann Verlag, 1988. ISBN 3 7002 0678 X.
  • Die U-Bahnlinie U6 1983-1989. Wien: Compress Verlag, 1989. ISBN 3 900607 19 2.
  • Die U-Bahn-Linie U3 1981-1997. Wien: Compress Verlag, 1991. ISBN 3 900607 22 2.
  • Hinkel, Walter J., Karl Treiber und Gerhard Valenta, U-Bahnen Gestern, Heute, Morgen: Von 1863 bis ins Jahr 2000. Wien: Compress Verlag, 1993. ISBN 3 900607 24 9.
  • U6: Wiens längste U-Bahn-Linie 1983-1996. Wien: Compress Verlag, 1996. ISBN 3 900607 29 X.

All pictures were deliberately scanned at low resolutions to discourage copying. If you like them, buy the books. Especially Horn's Stadtbahn and Hinkel/Treiber/Valenta's U-Bahnen books are excellent. The latter is also available in English.

Why this site?

Mostly because back in 1997, when this site was first published online, the official pages of the Vienna Transport Authority (Wiener Linien) did not exactly contain a wealth of information and I, on the other hand, had a large collection of material about the Vienna subway system.
