V Stock

In the late 1990s, a consortium led by SGP (now Siemens), Adtranz (now Bombardier) and Elin developed a new type of rolling stock for the Vienna metro, which is referred to as V stock (or sometimes, more precisely, V/v stock). A first prototype entered passenger service in 2000; as many as 60 trains (360 cars) may be built subsequently.

The new trains consist of six interlinked coaches: two driving trailers (v stock) and four non-driving motor cars (V stock). The cars are slightly wider and thus more spacious than U or U11 stock, and they will have air conditioning. The prototype is stationed at Erdberg depot and is mostly in service on line U3 (occasionally also on line U2).

In June 2002, a first batch of 25 trains was ordered, the first of which was delivered in February 2005. It is expected that the trains will enter service in late 2005. The trains are largely identical to the prototype, except that hardened metal seats will be used instead of the padded seats, the vehicles are fitted with CCTV, and there are additional smoke sensors.
