Vienna Metro > Future
Future
The number of metro projects for Vienna is legendary; it is said that there were more than in any other city of the world. It is quite impossible to predict what will be built and what will not, so all that is said below may or may not happen. Previous visitors to this page know what I mean.

Extensions currently under construction (2006)

Line U2: Schottenring - Aspernstrasse
After a number of delays, construction of this extension has finally begun in 2003. The section to Stadion is scheduled to open on 10 May 2008. The extension to Aspernstrasse was further postponed. Construction started in 2007 and is scheduled to be completed in 2010, three years later than originally planned.
Network 2004 with extensions under construction (32K)
Plans for the 4th stage after 2009
Of the projects outlined in the 2003 Transport Masterplan, the following network extensions were announced in July 2007 as the ones to be built next as soon as the current projects have been completed:
- Line U1: Reumannplatz - Rothneusiedl (construction scheduled for 2011-2015)
- Line U2: Aspernstrasse - Flugfeld Aspern (construction scheduled for 2009-2013)
- Line U2: Karlsplatz - Gudrunstrasse (construction scheduled for 2014-2019)
Plans for a 5th stage after 2020
There are no definite projects for the 5th stage yet; these are to be determined during the construction of the 4th stage. The following possible projects have been mentioned before, but are unlikely to be built in the near future:
-
Line U2: New southern branch Rathaus - Neubaugasse - Pilgramgasse - Matzleinsdorfer Platz - Wienerberg. The current southern branch would be transferred to line U5
-
Line U5: New line Hernals - Rathaus; from there the line would take over the southern branch Rathaus - Gudrunstrasse of line U2.
-
Line U4: Extension west from Hütteldorf to Auhof
-
Line U6: Extension north from Floridsdorf to Rendezvousberg and south towards Wiener Neudorf
Vienna metro network - extensions of stages 3, 4 and 5.
