“Is the fact that the mail is asking to provide information that the sender already knows an oversight,” …. No, is not an oversight; it is planned that way. The key is that they say, “Weitere Daten werden nicht benötigt.” They are reassuring people that they need provide no new info, but merely verify what they already have. Some people might see no harm in this, and thus be taken in. That is, people who don’t immediately delete everything that promises them money.

I'd seen the video, but thanks for posting the link to the full text. I think the most important passage is this:

“Almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

It might interest you to know that music from Mahler’s Symphony No.5 was played in the beginning car scene in NCIS: Los Angeles episode “Absolution”, shown last night in repeat. I was enjoying the music, but didn’t know what it was until the antiques dealer said to his driver, “Forgive me, Boyle, but it’s just too early for Mahler,” and turned it off. A bit of research elicited the info that this was from Symphony No. 5.

I don't think the bin Laden family is anti-western; they disowned Osama, and the Saudi government revoked his passport and stripped him of his his citizenship. And yes,in 1971,the middle east was vastly different; e.g.,the Shah was still in power and the Iran hostage crisis was still 8 years in the future. I still have not googled this picture, in case second guesses were required, so, dieter, I'm taking your word that my first guess is wrong. My second guess is the kid in the front wearing the hat and the green sweater tied around his neck.

Hoffe du kriegst dein Paket bald; was ist es denn, iPad2? Neues MacBook Pro? (-;

I think young people prefer the sound of the MP3 player because they’re used to it, which is sort of what Jonathan Berger says, isn’t it? (Interesting comments on that story, btw). And now they have gotten used to listening to music on their smart phones.

One could make an analogy here to the use of language. Before email or text messaging, and certainly before long distance phone calls became affordable, people communicated by letters, written in complete, well thought out sentences, so as to convey their exact meaning – and using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I doubt there is much subtlety nor nuanced meaning in text messages, yet young people seem to prefer texting to any other means of communication.

And finally, I love your gramophone picture. The horn has such nice waxy shine, and nice color variation. :-)
