Okay, so here is the solution to the quiz: Haldur was in Plakias, Crete (Greece).
Here's a step-to-step solution of the quiz, listing all the hints that Haldur has given.

Horst: "Haldur sends this picture and says he's sorry he can't write anything today. He was so tired of the dreary weather in Vienna that he boarded an aeroplane and left for an undisclosed location on Saturday. [...] The first clue is just this picture, and I'm not sure if this is much help. I can just about see Haldur's dolphin in the lower left corner, but apart from that I can't see much because of the bright sun."
Explanation: Haldur is somewhere so far away from Austria that the only way to go there is by aeroplane. Flights to this location leave Vienna on Saturdays. It's generally sunny there, and he's near water (a lake or the sea).

Haldur: "I'm sitting in an Internet café at a yet undisclosed location. Suffice it to say that I'm enjoying the sun, the sea, and pleasant temperatures of 29°C. I sent Horst a picture that I took recently and he promised to upload it to this link. It contains the second of a number of hints where I am. [...] I'm signing off now; more hints will be coming if you need them -- back to the beach!"
Explanation: There's an Internet café wherever Haldur is. He's at the sea (not a lake), and the temperature in early October is 29°C. The picture shows a blue and white dolphin on a sandy (not a pebbly) beach.

Haldur: "The people here are friendly, but something in their behaviour indicates that many of them have never seen a moose before. Also, I'm having trouble finding my staple food, elk grass. The stuff they have here (picture 1) is not bad, but tastes a bit intense, so I will be looking for alternatives soon. The stuff that the locals eat (picture 2) is mostly non-vegetarian, so I'm having a problem there, too."

Explanation: It's a country where there are no moose. Searching for herbs reveals that picture 1 shows thyme, and the food on picture 2 is either lasagna (which would mean Italy) or moussaka (which would mean Greece). Doing a Google search for "dolphin Greece" results in pictures of blue and white dolphins on a fresco in Knossos, Crete. Also, we learn that the ancient Cretans worshipped dolphins as gods. Doing a search for "dolphin Italy" has no conclusive results.

Haldur: "As I grew a bit sick of the local herbs, I had pizza today, which was a bit of a disappointment, probably because it's not an indigenous dish. But what am I telling you — if you are quick-witted and good with search tools, you have by now pinpointed my location to an area not larger than 300 km in diameter anyway, and you know this already. If you have a very twisted way of thinking, today's picture might result in just a handful of places where I could be."
Explanation: Pizza is from Italy, so the food must be moussaka, and Haldur must be in Greece, very likely in Crete. Incidentally, Crete is about 300 kms wide. If you search for goats in Crete, you will come across the agrimi or kri-kri, and you might even find this picture of a male kri-kri. The "very twisted way of thinking" would be to do an Internet search for "pizza kri-kri", which, oddly enough, would give you the Taverna Kri-kri in Plakias, Crete as a search result.

Haldur: "First of all I'd like to let you know that the animal on yesterday's picture is not a capricorn, but an animal that only lives in this area. Second, there's today's picture of a very peculiar fountain — certainly something that Roy would rather not see at the moment. It's located in a small town that's less than 30 minutes (by car) away from where I'm staying."
Explanation: As the kri-kri only lives in Crete, Haldur confirms that the picture must be of a kri-kri and the location must be Crete. A search for "fountain with lion heads Greece" or "fountain with lion heads Crete" will reveal that this fountain is located in Spili, western Crete, so Haldur cannot be too far away: from there he cannot really reach the northern coast of Crete in 30 minutes unless he's driving like mad, and on the southern coast the possibilities are limited to the stretch between Rodakino and Matala; he must be somewhere in this area.

Horst: "Haldur just sent this picture today, without any comment."
Explanation: The picture shows the village where Haldur is; you can use it later to cross-check your guesses.

Haldur: "If I ever become an artist, I sure want to look like the guy on today's picture. He [...] is a famous local musician, and I wanted to go to the concert that is announced here, only to find out that it was already one month ago. If only I understood this strange language! More music by the man can be found on his official website."
Explanation: This is the hint that reveals everything: If you look at the enlarged picture, you see that the artist is called "P. TZOUGANAKIS". If you still don't have a rough idea of the location, you should now see that the letters are obviously Greek, and searching for Tzouganakis will reveal he's from Crete. The handwritten additions on the poster announce the concert Haldur wanted to go to and specify the time and place: "TAVERNA-GALINI / PARASKENI 12 SEPTEMBRIOU / SOUDA / PLAKIA / 2832639103". Searching for "Taverna Galini" reveals that it exists in Souda near Plakias, which is within a 30-minute reach from Spili. If you look for pictures of Souda, you will find it is not the village from the picture of the day before, but if you check Plakias, you will find that the previous day's picture shows Plakias.

Haldur: "Rented a car today and drove around this island. Boy, speeding along these narrow mountain roads sure is fun!! I never knew that a Fiat Panda could go this fast, but then what do you expect from a car that's rented from a company named after an Italian race course... and those people look at me as if they've never seen a moose drive a car. Odd."
Explanation: There are two Italian race courses, Imola and Monza, and there is a car rental office called "Monza Travel" in Plakias and Agia Galini. The Kourtaloti Ravine on the picture is on the road between Plakias and Spili, only about 10 minutes from Plakias.

Haldur: "A few people demanded one more hint. Well, I hope this clarifies a few things."
Explanation: This is merely a better picture of Plakias than the previous one, with arrows pointing to the relative location of the other hints. It should clarify that the town we are looking for is not Agia Galini, but in fact Plakias.
