Happy New Year

Usually it's the Chinese who excel at hilarious translations. However, a box of German-made fortune cookies recently proved that the Germans are pretty good at them, too:

Fortune Cookies

Unfortunately, all I found inside the cookie was the slip of paper promised by the German text. The fortune would have been nice, though.

And Happy New Year to you also! Personally, I think the lack of a fortune would have bothered me. What? No fortune at all for me this year? That can't be good!

Fortune cookies have become banal. All the fortunes are of the "EGBOK" variety, i.e., "Everything's going to be O.K." What about edgy fortunes? At least horoscopes have a cautionary side.

@horst: I would also like to wish you a happy new year.
@laura: I recently read a NY-Times article according to which fortune cookies with a cautionary edge caused quite some uproar in the States.
