Okay, so I spent 3 hours on Sunday, 6 hours yesterday, and 2 hours today on piecing together a PowerPoint presentation for a 2-hour lecture tomorrow. And that's without encountering any technical problems at all, apart from spending 20 minutes looking for clip art of a stick figure. In what ways was PowerPoint supposed to make us more productive again?

Oh, I can explain it. Powerpoint makes us productive if our product is meetings! Where I work, people can sling together 20 minutes of Powerpoint work into 2 hours worth of everyone not working at meetings. Sometimes, we try to computer how much a given meeting is costing the company based on compensation levels of the attendees: a director, 2 section heads, 2 unit heads and about 10 professional staff plus 5 general services staff clock in at an astronomical figure per hour.

Scott, you could not have put it in better ways. Of course, the trick works much better when you use corporate design template and recycle old powerpoints over and over again...

@Horst: In a computer age, we seem more comfortable with computer-generated pictures. On the other hand, the overhead slides, handcrafted with a lot of love, we enjoyed back at school, simply look unprofessional.
But as with the overhead slides I have in mind, you can overdo everything...

@scott: Thereīs even a clock that letīs you key in the average cost of people attending a meeting plus the number of those people. Then you will see euros passing by during the meeting.

@horst: actually, I spent around 8 hours on monday, plus about 1-2 hours on sunday to prepare a presentation I was giving today as part of a job interview at a mobile operator here in Vienna. Actually, the presentation was a bit to long, as I was supposed to be only 10 minutes and I prepared way to many slides. But, the conclusion (about a possible product portfolio extension) was correct. Letīs see if I manage to get the job.
