It's the past

Tried to discourage one of my students from reading through all the archives of this weblog today.

"It's the past. Things were different then. I tried to do different things, and I'm not interested in them anymore."

In fact, what's the point of keeping an archive of stupid things you said that you don't want anyone to read anyway? A few days ago I received a very cryptic comment on an anti-George Bush entry I had written over three years ago. I had totally forgotten about it and was rather surprised by all the anger and bitterness in my posting. But that aside, who the heck would care to read a dated article like that?

And probably think that it's still representative of who I am now. I should sever the links as soon as possible, before anything serious happens.

Of course nobody, least of all me, wants some ill-advised thing that they said in the past thrown back in their face, nor used against them in some way years later; but I can't help wondering from the timing, if you are objecting to my reference to the, in my opinion timeless, article which you published in your book "Cursed."

This seems to me to be a different thing entirely. Am I wrong? If so, please tell me, so that I can avoid making this mistake in the future.

There is nothing between the lines in the above post. Blog entries which I deemed to be good enough for inclusion in the book are notably exempted from my criticism.

I have to keep in mind there is a librarian talking...

At least you should do some sifting before you disconnect the article. The librarian search for Saddam Hussein under the glorious leadership of the most regrettably absent Haldur Gislufson is now part of history. But it is still a well written and witty short story. I went looking for it only recently...

what you wrote ist like tree (growth) rings, thatīs how I see it, testimony of how you once felt and thought...and if you are not interested anymore, someone else could be...hope you leave it as it is (except engraving opinion changes, of course)...itīs a philosophical question and also a bit mood-dependent, isnīt it?
