January 19, 2005HappyHaving been in London for five days and then home in bed for another six days due to a fluish infection, I noticed how much happier I felt because during the whole time, I did not read any newspapers or watch news broadcasts on TV (basically, in case you were wondering, all I did watch during that time was 44 episodes of Alias, 4 Indian movies and several cooking shows on BBC Prime. Oh, and an episode of Six Feet Under. And CSI Miami. But that was it). To prolong this feeling of happiness, I have therefore resolved to abstain from reading newspapers and watching news on TV for as long as I can manage. Let's see if this works. There's a chance it might — I resolved to eat less some 40 days ago, and I have managed to keep it up until now, losing quite some weight in the process. First thing I'll do is probably cancel my newspaper subscription. Let's see if kicking the news habit is as easy as kicking the smoking habit. [more] Trend: Horst is happy. I'm still not reading, I just went to the Aardvark to see if my internet connection was working.... [more] Is watching maggots feeding from the head of a living human being (as seen on CSI Miami) better for your well-being than watching the news? Or is it the fact that you're not confronted with the gruesome details of the real world which makes you feel so much better? Hmmm... I didn't see the episode with the maggots, but they had the same thing in Gorky Park many years ago... and yes, fiction, however gruesome it may be, is never as bad as reality because you can always tell yourself it's not real, and unlike what some of our politicians do, it doesn't really affect me personally. Saying that, I still haven't watched Bhoot because I am kind of queasy when it comes to horror movies... need someone to watch this with me, probably. horst, is this an invitation? ... sabine: Oh, yes, absolutely. Mind you, I also have about 8 portions of vegetable biryani in the freezer because I cooked way too much of it for today's supper... I'll phone you about it, ok? great horst, i have no idea what biryani is but it's about time for another indian evening ... bernhard and i love horror movies ... |
