Impressions from France (5)

I think France is one of the few European countries that doesn't have to worry about dying out. I've never spent so much time stumbling over prams or trying to avoid being run over by a pram than during the time I spent there. And one other thing struck me as peculiar: in Austria, you can't sit on a train without hearing a mobile phone going off every couple of minutes. In France, you can't sit on a train without hearing a child going off every couple of minutes.

Well, there's a rather simple explanation - excellent childcare facilities for all ages = high birth rates. Conservatives never get that correlation ....

it must be the abundance of GWOs or FESs or whatever and i asked on aug 22!

So that was it: 22! really bad number. There is always a catch...

I also wanted to confirm Gina. Together with some Skandinavian countries, France is one of the very few European countries that actually have "natural" growth. And the reason definitely lies in the availability of daytime child care.

Possibly, but even if you have excellent childcare facilities (which don't exist in Austria), you'd still have to be able to afford two children, and that seems to be rather difficult these days.

Don't tell me...
Still, when both parents can have a job without too many worries for the children it helps.
