So-called singing

William Shatner is singing (MOV, 1.2 MB) again. They ought to pass a law against this. On the other hand, I never liked Pulp's "Common People", which was, let's admit it, mostly overhyped and pompous. Shatner's version may actually be an improvement of sorts. The original was merely gruesome, but Shatner's version is probably the most bizarre thing you've ever heard (that is not counting Shatner's first album, of course). Suw has more details.

And just in case you need some relief after this, here's reason #78 why The Fall are the greatest: (Birtwistle's) Girl in Shop (MP3, 3.6 MB). William Shatner is just silly. The Fall can be silly and totally brilliant at the same time. Not to mention their exquisit brand of cacophony.

We received this ping from what kind of sick weirdo are you? on July 27, 2004 01:06 AM:

I need this record -- now!: Thanks to Horst (where did you find it?) we've got a sneak peak of a track [Note: 1.2MB MOV file] William Shatner's upcoming record. The thing I love most about this track is that it's a cover of my favorite Pulp song "Common People", with one of ... [more]

I adore shatner“s version of "lucy in the sky with diamonds". "mr. tambourine man" is also great.
I hear there“s also a version of "these boots are made for walking" by nichelle "uhura" nichols, but have not been able to verify this.
leonard "spock" nimoy“s albums tend to be fairly good, by the way, esp. his renditions of "sunny" and "if I had a hammer"....

Oh, I agree, Leonard Nimoy is a totally different caliber. Though if I want dramatic music, I'll leave Leonard aside and go directly to Tim Rose's debut album. Allmusic.com lists just these albums for Nichelle Nichols, but that might be incomplete.

tim rose, oh yes! "come away melinda" is a total classic. so is "long time man". and "morning dew".
you can make 10 nick caves out of every single note rose is singing...

Not all of Nimoy's songs are as silly as the Bilbo Baggins song, but I'd still say they're something of an acquired taste. Especially the serious ones.

Wow. I have to admit I'm really excited about the Shatner record.

I'm also horrified by the Bilbo Baggins song. Damn. I've never seen that before.
