7 Months late

Funny how none of the Austrian newspapers reported anything about this back in March: seventy years ago, on March 4, 1933, chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss shut down the Austrian parliament and began the Austro-Fascist dictatorship that was to last until the anschluss in 1938. Funny enough, today, the Wiener Zeitung has an excellent article on the beginning of Austro-Fascism. Why they are publishing it today is beyond me; I guess it's a good sign that they are publishing an article about it at all, even if its seven months late.

Well, the article is good but excellent seems a little overrated to me. However, the remarkable part is that, after all I heard and read about the current government getting rid of critical spirits in Wiener Zeitung, they eventually did publish this article. It may have helped that the author omitted any reference to leading members of today's OeVP who still try to present Dollfuss as an idol who brought the Conservative Party to absolute power and allegedly died as a martyr for the Austrian cause.

Seeing how everything about this period seems to have been purged from our country's official history (and yes, indeed, some politicians are still praising Dollfuss as an anti-Nazi martyr), I'd regard just about any article that sets things straight as worthy of praise. It's sad, really.
