Wikipedia
Wikipedia is probably the best known free encyclopedia on the web. A special feature of Wikipedia is that anyone can create or edit Wikipedia entries. Even Google recognised the impact of Wikipedia, and now provides a particular corresponding search function. Using the prefix "define:" before the search term will specifically list entries from the Wikipedia database. Wikipedia is available in several languages, like in German.

Note: There is also a section of Wikipedia dedicated to the Category:Bioinformatics, which contains a growing alphabetical list of entries !

Globes and Maps
Google Earth
Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. With Google Earth you may:
- fly from space to your neighborhood. Type in an address and zoom right in.
- Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Get driving directions.
- ilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings.
- Save and share your searches and favorites. Even add your own annotations.
Note: Google Earth is a downloadable Windows program, which works best when using high-speed internet connections. Even on older machines, Google Earth performs quite smoothly and works faster than comparable programs like NASA World Wind.
Map24
Map24 is one of the best free internet resources in the field of address searching and route planning. You can search addresses and display maps of towns down to the street level. Map24 is available for different regions like Europe and North America.
NASA World Wind
NASA World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara.
Note: NASA World Wind is a downloadable program which requires Microsoft DirectX. NASA World Wind somehow similar to Google Earth but has higher demands concerning hardware conditions and net connection speeds, although picture resolution seems to be inferior to Google. Nevertheless, the program has some very nice features, like the exact display of latitude, longitude, altitude, and distance. Also, a catalog of landmarks is included, as well as special options like the display of all flags of the world's countries.
ViaMichelin
ViaMichelin provides street maps and lets you plan routes, primarily available for European countries. ViaMichelin is also available in different languages, like in German.
