You
will soon find out, that you can go almost everywhere in Vienna by public
transportation. Here are some instructions to help you:
The
Vienna public transportation system offers the following means of
transportation: Streetcars (Trams) in German "Straßenbahn",
Buses in German "Autobus", the subway in German "U-Bahn" and the railway system within Vienna, called
"Schnellbahn or S-Bahn".
All means of transportation can be used with the same ticket.
Tickets:
Single
ride: You can buy tickets for a single ride on the bus or streetcar and at the
stations of subways and trains. The price at present is EUR 2.20--. You need
coins for the vending machine. It entitles you to use all means of
transportation to reach a destination on a reasonable route within a time span
of up to one hour. Caution: Not all cars of the streetcar have conductors or
vending machines: You cannot buy tickets on a car marked "Schaffnerlos". You can save some money by buying the
single ride tickets in advance (it is officially called Fahrschein
fur 1 Zonenfahrt, or Vorverkaufsfahrschein,
the price is €1.80.--, locations where to buy are listed below). Each ticket
has to be marked at the stamping machine (in German "Entwerter")
when first boarding a bus or a streetcar or when entering the railway or subway
station.
Daily
passes: If you plan to use public transportation several times a day you can
buy a 24 h ticket which is called "24-Stunden Wien"
for the price of € 5.70 (locations where to buy are listed below). You mark the
ticket at the stamping machine (in German "Entwerter")
when first boarding a bus or a streetcar or when entering the railway or subway
station. From then on you can use all means of transportation within Vienna for
24 hours.
Three
day pass: If you plan to use public transportation several times for two or
three days in a row, you can buy a 48 or 72 h ticket which is called
"Sightseeing" for the price of € 10.00 or € 13.60 (locations where to
buy are listed below). You mark the ticket at the stamping machine (in German
"Entwerter") when first boarding a bus or a
streetcar or when entering the railway or subway station. From then on you can
use all means of transportation within Vienna for 48 or 72 hours.

Tage Karte: This is a
ticket having 8 areas where it can be marked by the stamping machine ("Entwerter"). When marked, the holder of the ticket is
entitled to use all means of transportation in Vienna for the whole day. If
marked twice, two persons going together can use the ticket, if marked three
times, three persons can go etc. The price is € 28.80 ,
locations where to buy are listed below.
Weekly
pass: You, you can also buy a weekly pass, which entitles you to use public
transportation from Monday morning to next Monday 09:00. It is called "Wochenkarte" the price is € 14.00 .
Getting to and from the airport: You can go to and
from the airport, using the Airport Bus. The fare of € 7.-- is paid on the bus, you
can either go to or from the Vienna City Air Terminal, the Südbahnhof
and the Westbahnhof. It is also possible to go by
train. There are two possibilities: (1) You can take
the City Air Train (CAT) which goes non stop from Vienna to the airport. The
fare is € 9.— (2) it is also possible to take the
regular train, (S-Bahn number S7). Since the airport
is located outside the central zone you have to proceed in the following way.
Arriving at the airport, you go to the train station and buy a ticket at the
machine on the platform for two zones (EUR 3.60), which entitles you to go to
any destination in Vienna. You have to mark it at the station before boarding
the train. When going from Vienna to the airport, you have to have mark two tickets (e.g. two Fahrscheine
für 1 Zonenfahrt)
simultaneously. The train to the airport leaves from Wien
Mitte / Landstrasse, its
number is S7, but unfortunately there are only two trains per hour.
Caution!!!!!
Do not board any means of transportation without a valid ticket! There are
occasional controls and the minimum fine is € 60.--
Where
to buy tickets: Any tickets which are more economic than a single ride must be
bought in advance. You can do this at any train station during the times the
station is open, from 06:30 to 18:30 at the U-Bahn
stations Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz,
Schottentor, Schwedenplatz,
Hietzing and Reumannplatz,
at additional ticket booths and at most of the Tabak Trafik (places which sell cigarettes and newspapers) in
Vienna.
Near
the conference location you have the following possibilitiy:
At the subway stop Schottentor and at the Tabak Trafik located at Nußdorferstraße 4 (Which is between the Bank Creditanstalt Bankverein and the
supermarket „Hofer“) Have fun using our public transportation
