SÀNGÓ ist der hauptorisha von oyo. in der SANTERÍA zählt er zu den SIETE POTENCIAS AFRICANAS. seine Farben sind rot und schwarz, sein symbol ist die doppelaxt. in der SANTERÍA wird er mit der heiligen barbara assoziiert, in brasilien mit sao jeronimo, in trinidad ist er als ST. JOHN ABAKUSO bekannt. möglicherweise ist der historische SÀNGÓ mit einer älteren Gottheit, JAKUTA, verschmolzen. in trinidad und grenada ist er der wichtigste der orisha, der orisha-kult heißt dort auch "shango". auch im KELE-KULT auf st. lucia ist shango eine zentrale figur.
