ODUDUWA

Odùduwà ist der Ahnvater der YORÙBÁ und der erste Herrscher von IFÉ. Alle Königreiche der Yorùbá führen sich auf ihn zurück, die Gründer der jeweiligen Herrscherhäuser gelten als seine Söhne. In den Mythen der Yorùbá ist die Welt in Ifé entstanden,wo OBÀTÁLÁ die ersten Menschen geformt hat. Als er von der Arbeit und dem ungewohnten Palmwein müde geworden war, brachte Odùduwá sein Werk zu Ende. Andere Erzählungen besagen, dass Odùduwà aus einem Land im Osten nach Ifé gekommen ist. Odùduwà musste sich am Beginn seiner Herrschaft auch mit Obàtálá auseinandersetzen, der nach einem erfolglosen Putsch gegen den König zu seinem Freund Obawinni ins Exil ging, und von dort mit seinen Leuten, den Igbo, nächtliche Überfälle in Masken, die sie als Geistwesen erscheinen ließen, auf Ifé durchführte. Nachdem der Friede teilweise durch Ojumu und Oluorogbo wieder hergestellt worden war, entdeckte schließlich eine Frau namens Moremi das Geheimnis der Masken der Igbo und löste den Konflikt.

Odùduwà is the ancestor of the YORÙBÁ and the first king of IFÉ. All the kingdoms of the Yorùbá trace themselves back to him as their father, since their first kings are considered sons of Odùduwà. According to Yorùbá myths, the world originated in Ifé, where OBÀTÁLÁ formed the first men out of clay. When he got tired because of working hard and drinking palm-wine, Odùduwá accomplished this work. Other stories hold, that Odùduwà came to Ifé from a land in the east. It is also reported, that Odùduwà had to face attacks by Obàtálá during his reign. After having unsuccessfully revolted against Odùduwàs reign, Obàtálá was driven out of the city and lived in exile with his friend Obawinni. He raided Ifé at night with his people, the Igbo, in masks that made them appear like dangerous spirits. After peace had been restored partially through the efforts of Ojumu and Oluorogbo, it finally came back to Ifé after a woman called Moremi discovered the secrets of the masks the Igbo wore.
