das obi-orakel der YORÙBÁ dient zur lösung einfacher fragen, die mit JA/NEIN beantwortet werden können, wie sie etwa im verlauf von ritualen auftauchen ("ist das opfer angenommen worden?") im yorùbáland werden im OBI DIDA genannten ritual kolanüsse (obi abata) in vier hälften gebrochen und geworfen. die kolanüsse zeigen an der innenseite zwei "weibliche" (abo) und zwei "männliche" (ako) figuren. interpretiert man nur, ob innen- oder außenseite fallen, erhält man die grundlegenden 5, interpretiert man auch, ob "w" oder "m" zu sehen sind, erhält man 9 FIGUREN des orakels. in der SANTERÍA werden kokosnussschalen verwendet, an deren innenseite kauriemuscheln befestigt sind, zwei mit dem grat nach oben (die "weiblichen") und zwei mit der knolle (die "männlichen") oben. die obi werden in der santería auch dazu verwendet, die ODU herauszufinden, indem der wurf von oben nach unten gelesen wird. obwohl schalen der kokosnuss (yorùbá: "agbon") verwendet werden, heißt das orakel in der santería auch obi und ist mit einem eigenen orisha dieses namens verbunden, von dem in einem PATAKI, das den brauch begründet, erzählt wird.

the obi-oracle of the YORÙBÁ serves for answering simple questions, that could be answered with either "YES" or "NO", like they could occur within the course of a ritual ("has the sacrifice been accepted"?) in yorùbáland kola nuts, split into 4 parts (obi abata) are cast within the OBI DIDA-ritual. the broken nuts show two "female" (abo) and two "male" (ako)signs at their inside. simply reading the cast with respect to whether the nuts have the inside or the outside up gives 5, taking into account, too, whether "f" or "m" are up, renders 9 FIGURES of the oracle. in SANTERÍA parts of coconut-shells are used, to which cowrie-shells have been attached, two of them showing the ridge ("female") and two of them showing the bulb ("male"). the obi are also used in santería to cast ODU, reading the cast from upside down ("north to south"). although the shells of the coconut (yorùbá: "agbon") are used, the oracle's name in santería is also obi. the shells of the coconut are linked to a special orisha called obi,the main figure in a PATAKI explaining the custom in santería.
