A Movement of Connected Individuals: Social Media Serving for Information, Relationship and Identity Management in the 2009 Student Protests in Austria
Axel Maireder, Christian SchwarzeneggerResearch on participation through social media in German communication studies mainly focuses on challenges for professional journalism (Neuberger 2008) and deploys classical concepts of public spheres and counter-public sphere on Web 2.0 phenomena (Engesser & Wimmer 2009). To comprehend social phenomena of political participation, organisation and empowerment through social media, we suggest to step beyond such ‘top-down’ approaches and do grounded empirical research on communication efforts within social movements.
We focus on a particular case – the student protests emerging from Vienna in October 2009 – to exemplify the functions of social media within social movements and the potentials of political participation and collectivisation. Starting from the squatting of the main lecture hall (Audimax) of the University of Vienna by students protesting against education policy, a large social movement emerged. Within days mass demonstrations of up to 40.000 people were organised and the matter of education predominated national public discourse for weeks. The protest was not initiated by the official student’s council or political interest groups but by individuals sharing a common issue and connecting by the means of social media: Twitter, Facebook, Ustream, YouTube, and blogs.
